The UK Hardcore scene has been exploding with talent in recent years and there is no question that London based hardcore band Regrets meet the same criteria with their highly anticipated debut album ‘XL‘ or ‘Extra Large‘.

From start to finish this 11 track album gives off a fast paced, high energy punk-esc style of hardcore bursting throughout it and why not with a run time of just over 16 minutes. If you’ve ever been to a Regrets show I’m sure you’re aware of how frantic it gets and how quickly that happens.

With what I will call a latin inspired opening in ‘Tequila’ being played quite softly you don’t get the sense that this is going to, oh wait, it hit’s hard out of nowhere! There’s also notations of further latin inspirational snippets within the album that give a subtle break for the record.

With their singles ‘Suck It Up’ & ‘XL’ headlining the bill off this album they both hit instrumentally and lyrically. Feedback from the instruments opening both tracks up, run into heavy hitting drums and riffs, where the vocals also scream with a sense of anguish we can all relates to and sing along with. We can’t forgetting the music video for XL being set in a Morleys Chicken Shop. Come on, this is going to be a classic!

‘N9ne to 5ive’ has lyrics that will hit you in a way that you can internally agree with when listening to it. Dealing with the pressures of your typical 9-5 job role where you’re working your way through the stresses of everyday working life. If you’re stuck in a worthless job role where you’re colleagues are just fucking annoying I’m sure this will hit you more.

There’s a sense of classic traditional hardcore bass and drum line openings in certain tracks that you can get moving to. There is definitely an opportunity to two step within this run time especially with tracks such as ‘Losing Sleep’ and ‘Break Free’.

This album really reminds me of some early Trash Talk material.

I ran through this album quite a number of times and even though it’s short, it’s sweet. Regrets have made an album where each track can blend with it’s predessor. Where their opening track ‘Tequila’ can be misconcepted as an ending as well as an opening theme to the album; if you chuck it on shuffle.

It can get you straight back into the riff raptor the album is.

In a few words:
XL, is a hard hitting punk-esc style hardcore album that will get you moving rapidly regardless of its short run time.
