Going off the beaten path comes Essex Deathcore band Beyond Extinction. With their downtuned and downtempo’d style these lads have proudly been waving the essex three sword banner since their inception back in 2018!
Through their trials and tribulations they have made a name for themselves within the UK Deathcore scene and beyond. With their recent single release of ‘Witchfinder’ these guys are going from strength to strength.
I’ve been speaking to guitarist Jude about their history and what’s coming next for the band!
FIRST OF ALL WHERE ARE YOU GUYS BASED & HOW DID YOU ALL MEET?
We used to all be based in Essex but we are a bit more spread out now. Our vocalist and drummer met at school in early 2018 and I joined about a year after they first formed the band. Danny then joined a couple years ago after the sad passing of our guitarist Zach Scott.
WHAT WAS THE SCENE LIKE WHERE YOU WERE GROWING UP & HOW DID YOU GET INVOLVED IN IT?
Our main scene that we grew up in was in South Essex and there were a lot of rock bands and punk bands in that scene but not much in the way of heaviness locally. When we started gigging slightly further away however we started to find other bands as brutal as us. Saying that though there are some fantastic heavy bands in Essex! We’ll come from slightly different musical inspiration backgrounds but we all found that we loved the same core of music.
THIS MIGHT SOUND LIKE A DUMBASS QUESTION BUT HOW DID YOU COME UP WITH THE NAME BEYOND EXTINCTION?
I believe it was a lyric from one of our early really terrible demos that we used to play in front of five people on a Thursday evening. I guess it sounded good and we just stuck with it.
HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR SOUND TO SOMEBODY WHO HASN’T HEARD YOU BEFORE?
Low sludgy groovy and doomy, kind of like a five car pile up to a metronome.
WHAT HAS BEEN SOME OF THE BIGGEST CHALLENGES YOU’VE BEEN FACED WITH?
Undoubtedly our biggest challenge to overcome was the tragic sudden passing of one of our founding members and lead guitarist Zach Scott.
Zach was there from the beginning and really helped us to find our sound and he was one of our brothers so it was the darkest time for all of us, but in a way the love that we have for each other and the love we got from our community kept us going and now we’ve never felt stronger.
WHO ARE SOME OF YOUR ALL TIME FAVOURITE ARTISTS?
We all love and appreciate Meshuggah, Black Tongue and Acacia Strain, with some of us leaning more towards deathcore like Whitechapel and Thy Art is Murder.
WHAT ARE SOME OF THE SHOWS YOU’VE REALLY ENJOYED BEING A PART OF & DO YOU HAVE A FAVOURITE VENUE?
A big highlight for us was playing with Signs Of The Swarm. Another would be our first tour outside of the UK in Ireland last year. Also our remembrance show for Zach, Never Forget Your Own, at The Underworld in Camden in London was also incredibly special and a moment we’ll never forget.
WHAT WOULD BE YOUR DREAM TOUR TO GET BEYOND EXTINCTION ON?
We would absolutely love a chance to play one of the big European metal festivals like Summer Breeze or Wacken – fingers crossed for the future!
WHAT HAS BEEN SOME OF THE BEST EXPERIENCES YOU’VE HAD TOGETHER?
We’ve had some amazing times together on various tours up and down the country and in Ireland. It would be impossible to pick just one example, but a funny moment in retrospect would be our van breaks failing on the way to Cambridge and having to coast the van all the way to the venue and then abandoning our vehicle. Stressful at the time but very funny now.
HOW HAVE YOU FOUND THE SCENE IN ESSEX CHANGE IN RECENT YEARS?
It’s always exciting to see new up-and-coming bands entering the scene and Essex and the local area have some amazing bands coming up that you should watch out for, like Ominous Moon and Knocked for Six.
HOW IMPORTANT IS REPRESENTATION IN THE COMMUNITY?
I think it’s extremely important because metal has a unique appeal to people who’ve been marginalized in society or haven’t exactly fit in with the normal mix of people in life so it kind of innately has this way of attracting people who feel left out. Having everyone band together at shows for the love and passion of metal is really what overcomes a lot of stigma or prejudice.
We want to give a huge shout out to Jazmin L’Amy, our press agent at Cosa Nostra PR, who has been with us from nearly day one and has been a constant and fierce presence in the scene for a lot of bands, not just for us.
WE MEET A LOT OF PEOPLE IN THIS SCENE. DO YOU HAVE A GREAT CONNECTION WITH ANYONE IN PARTICULAR AND WOULD RECOMMEND WORKING WITH?
Sebastian Smith (Writhe in Filth) is a great live sound engineer who we’d definitely recommend working with.
WHO HAS BEEN SOME OF YOUR LARGEST INFLUENCES FOR YOUR MUSIC?
Black Tongue, Meshuggah and The Acacia Strain are the top three you can definitely hear in our music.
WE CAN’T ALL BE MUSICIANS 24/7 SO WHAT JOBS/CAREERS DO YOU GUYS HAVE?
One of us works in the charity sector, one in local government, one at JD Sports and one at a bar. We’ll let you guess who’s who!
WE HAVE YOU GOT ANY HOBBIES/INTERESTS YOU’D LIKE TO SHARE WITH THE PEOPLE?
Myself and Danny are big gamers, and most of us in the band really love football and going to football games locally.
YOU RELEASED YOUR DEBUT ALBUM ‘WHERE THEY GATHER’ LAST SEPTEMBER. WHAT WERE YOUR INFLUENCES FOR THESE TRACKS AND HOW HAPPY WERE YOU WITH HOW IT CAME TOGETHER?
The main influence for the album was Jasper’s hatred of how claustrophobic and stuffy London can be especially away from the touristy areas. The noise and the grey and the dirt all really get to you eventually, and that led to this concept of this last city on Earth coming forward.
We’re extremely happy with how the album came out which is amazing as we’re all very much perfectionists. It was wonderful to record with Mykey Kew at Rogue Recording Studios in London and an amazing experience working with Andy Mallaby of Osiah to get the album sounding exactly how we envisioned.
It was even more of an amazing achievement considering we are completely independent. Max Marshall, a good friend of ours, also did the artwork which came out unbelievable. It would be impossible to nail down just one track that we really loved working on but as far as features go, to be able to get Alex from Black Tongue to feature on ‘Tyranny’ was a massive thing and we are certain that Zach would have been extremely excited about that.
WHAT CAN WE EXPECT TO SEE FROM YOU GUYS FOR THE REST OF 2026?
We’ve got a couple really good shows and tours coming up including this weekends Essex Deathfest!
